Understanding of Child Suicide On World Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing mental health crisis affecting people of all ages, including children. This article aims to raise awareness and provide actionable steps for parents to support their children’s mental health. A date by NCRB ( National Crime Report Bureau) says that in India the rate of student suicide increased by 4% which indicates a worse situation. Our Children are the next generation and their well-being affects the whole society.

Among U.S. pediatric deaths, more than 25% are by suicide. It is the second leading cause of death for children and young adults ages 10 to 24, 

Children’s stress is driven by a combination of academic pressures, social expectations, mental health struggles, and the overwhelming challenges of growing up in a fast-paced, digitally connected world.

Childhood and adolescence are critical periods of development, but they can also be times of intense pressure and emotional disturbance. Studies have shown a steady rise in the rate of child and adolescent suicides in recent years. These are the factors contributing to this tragic trend:

The pressure to perform well academically and secure a successful future can weigh heavily on young minds. The fear of failure or not meeting expectations can lead to anxiety and depression. Children also face peer pressure in terms of appearance, and performance which impacts their mental health profoundly.

3. Limit Pressure:

  • Encourage your child to do their best but avoid setting unrealistic expectations. Make sure your expectations are realistic and do not make the child under extreme pressure.
  • Emphasize the importance of effort and learning rather than just outcomes and don’t compare them with others

4. Encourage Healthy Habits:

  • Promote a balanced lifestyle that includes physical activity, a healthy diet, adequate sleep, and time for relaxation and hobbies.
  • Encourage offline activities and limit screen time, especially on social media, which can be a source of stress.

5. Seek Professional Help:

  • Don’t hesitate to seek help from mental health professionals if you notice signs of distress. Therapy, counseling, and other resources can provide the support your child needs.
  • Involve your child in discussions about their mental health and let them be part of the decision-making process when seeking help. 
  • Don’t let stigma hold you back—therapy or counseling doesn’t mean your child is broken. It’s just a way to help them feel better and get the support they need.

6. Model Positive Behavior:

  • Children learn by example. Show them how to cope with stress, manage emotions, and seek help when needed.
  • Demonstrate self-care and openness about your own feelings and mental health. 
  • Try emotional regulation exercises to make them emotionally strong.
