Children are getting distracted easily. They hardly get attention for 20 minutes. As a parent we always complaining about their study but have you ever found out the solution for this problem. Just change your perspective and start to help child to manage distraction in study and to be focus.
Human mind cannot stay focused more than 45 minutes and if we talking about children their attention span is too short.
Little kids have only 10 minutes of focus span, as the child grows older, the focus time increases.
So, think about how can you help your child to manage distraction.
How to get engage young child
Young children like to play all the time and they barely want to study. So, it become confusing for us to get them involved in study.
They always say, “I don’t want to write or read.”, “It is boring to solve maths sum.” Etc.
And parents start to yelling at child or they get angry on them.
Well, this is not the right way to handle your child because timely your child maybe increase disinclination for study.
They are too young to handle the stress of study and exam and it can lead them to exam phobia.
Here are some points to remember while handling young child
- Apply some fun way to teach them difficult subject or topics
- Make their study time enjoyable
- Do not create fear of exam/study
- Do not say the words like, “if you do not study you will fail in the exam”
- Fix time for study and make them aware of the schedule.
- Make 2 or 3 part for studying so they get less irritate with study
- If you see that child is getting distracted ask for attention in calmer tone
- Be aware that they have shorter attention span so give them a little break after 15 minutes (talk to them, sing poem together, change the subject etc.)
- Give them enough time to play outdoor, allow them to do their favourite activity
- Stop teaching after evening (if possible) and give them time to relax mind and body
- Make sure that child gets enough sleep

- Do not pressurize them for score ranking just give appreciation for their efforts
- Focus on their skill instead of marksheet
How to help older child
Older children mean they are in their adolescent age, they are in pre-teen or teen age, the most sensitive age where lecturing and imposed rules never work.
You have to be patience while handling them and specially if there is exam in near time.
Their most hurdle in exam preparation is mobile because nowadays many teenagers have personal mobile phone or tablets or they have access of their parents’ mobile.
I observe many times that they use mobile more than their parents when they do not own a phone. Laptop and TVs are also easily accessible so they get distracted very easily and by many things.
Without giving a long lecture to your child, talk to them straight and in meaningful way. Make conversation before implement rules because they have already developed rebellious behaviour in this age.
Give them a glimpse of their future and let them think by themselves then ask for their co-operation with the rules with the mobile (personal/parent’s)

Teach them to manage distraction with mobile
Maintain home screen
Home screen of mobile is mostly cluttering with lots of apps. So, whenever we see lots of apps, we can’t stay away from it. We immediately open the lock and get tangled in the phone one after another opening the app and wasting our time.
By decluttering home screen, we will see less and the most important apps and that’s why it takes a little time to waste on the mobile screen.
Put Time Limit
Use Digital Wellbeing and Parental Controls to get aware that where they are wasting their most time. Ask them to put limits on that app, at least till the exam is over. You can make that app password protect so they can not have access to that particular app where they waste most of the time.
This technique always works not only for children but also for us.
Turn off Notification
The best technique ever, why? Because in today’s time children uses their phone to make a note, to search their doubts on Google and their references are also save on a phone.
So, it is obvious that they use their phone while studying and, in this scenario, if notification sound pop it grabs attention and a person gets distracted.
It is that simple. Just turn off the notification and you will be saved from distraction.
Pomodoro technique
Human mind cannot focus more than 45 minutes so the simple rule is, give your brain a little break before it gets distracted.
The POMODORO technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo, scientifically proven and it increases the productivity of brain.
Break work into intervals, 25 minutes of work than 5-10 minutes of break, after three sets of pomodoro take a long break of 20 to 30 minutes.
Practice this method to get best they can do.
Give time to waste
Remember that first they are human and that’s why give them time to relax and enjoy. Study time/Exam time is not a punishment where they have no time for themselves or no fun activity.
Give them time to waste where they can enjoy movie or games whatever they like. Encourage them for outdoor activity so they can feel fresh.
Most important points for parents
